Although we are told to “never judge a book by its cover,” studies have shown that upon meeting a person for the first time, we are quick to evaluate on appearance, attire and the way they carry themselves. It is therefore crucial to take pride in your image, both for your professional life as much as your personal. By looking good, it psychologically drives you to feel more valuable and to project this on to others. Psychologists at Stanford University found that people who truly and authentically feel they look good extend this feeling to those they meet.

Being well groomed and taking care of yourself is not something just for the ladies. Men need, and deserve, to take the time to treat themselves well when it comes to grooming. As a man about town and a strong believer in looking good is feeling good, Medy Navani, Founder and Creative Director of Design Haus Medy, provides his top grooming tips for the modern-day gentleman.

Personal Hygiene

Being hygienic, well-groomed and looking presentable is the most important aspect to being confident, in my opinion. Shower once a day, choosing a shampoo and body wash you love the scent of and that helps you feel energized and fresh for the day ahead. Occasionally, use a body exfoliator in the shower to get rid of dead skin cells and clean out pores.

Facial Hair Care

Whether you choose to be clean shaven or have facial hair, keeping your beard well-groomed is extremely important. If you are like me and have a beard, one of my favourite products to use is almond oil which keeps my beard soft, sleek and neat to the touch. An important factor to remember in facial hair care, is there are a variety of treatments and hair removal options other than shaving. Although shaving may be easier and painless compared to some alternatives, it also increases the quantity of hair, makes it rough to the touch and can mean it grows in different directions. I recommend threading or waxing as a possible choice as it keeps the face clean and helps you control facial hair. The beard and eyebrows give a lot of contour to the face, so taking the time to have them properly shaped will ensure you emphasize your best facial features. Also, don’t be afraid to wax your ears, nose, eyebrows and cheeks as there is nothing worse than having hair poking out of these places for everyone to see.

Nailing It

Manicures and pedicures are a must for the modern-day gentleman. Your nails are a part of your personal hygiene. Do not think that people in business meetings aren’t paying attention to your nails, because they are. I like to make this a Friday ritual but by no means do you have to have it done as frequently. Once every two weeks will ensure your nails always remain maintained and presentable. I have someone come to my home while I relax and watch football. I prefer this instead of going to the salon as I like using my own products for a more comfortable and hygienic experience but there are plenty of men’s only salons around that offer these services.

Scentastic

One of the greatest compliments is being told you smell good. Cologne is essential in a businessman’s life. I always recommend two scents for the day and two for the evening. For the day, go for a more fresh, fruity smell. As for the evening, I would recommend something sweet and spicy or opt for an oud laced scent. However, be careful not to go overboard with the cologne, instead apply just a dab on your neck and wrists so it doesn’t overwhelm the people around you.
